Night Waves

on BBC Radio 3

South African playwright Athol Fugard has worked internationally as author, director and actor, though in the past his work often met official opposition in his homeland.

Paul Allen talks to him about the changing role of theatre in South Africa and about Johannesburg's Market Theatre revival of The Island, as it opens in London. Set in the notorious Robben Island maximum security prison, the play concerns the men and women who were incarcerated there in the fight for democracy.
