Henri Charriere, nicknamed Papillon, is sentenced to life imprisonment on the notorious Devil's Island, French Guiana, for a crime he did not commit. For the next 13 years, Papillon devotes his entire energies to escape and suffers savage punishments and inhumanities as a result, before his final bid for freedom.
