Since its foundation in 1842, the Vienna Philharmonic has come to be regarded as one of the grandest in the world. It has always been completely self-governing and independent, with the players themselves carrying out all the administration. They also choose the programmes and conductors they want, leading to the orchestra's autocratic reputation.
