The Three Cornered Hal was first produced by Diaghilev's Ballet Company at the Alhambra Theatre, London, in 1919, with choreography by Massine (who danced the role of the Miller) and scenery and costumes by Picasso. It tells the story of a miller whose wife's charms attract the attention of the local Governor, or Corregidor. Unable to win her favour by fair means, he has the miller arrested so that he can pursue her without hindrance; but with all his scheming, he only procures for himself a ducking in the river and the derision of the whole village. The three dances to be performed are: 'The Neighbours' (in the style of a Seguidilla), 'The Miller's Dance,' and 'Final Dance' (a Jota). (Deryck Cooke)
