Alan Fairford is now close on the heels of his kidnapped friend Darsie Latimer. With the help of Nanty Ewart he has crossed the Solway Firth into Cumberland, and has met the mysterious Father Buonaventure, alias Prince Charles Edward Stewart , from whom he takes a letter for Hugh Redgauntlet , Darsic's kidnapper.
Meanwhile Latimer and Lilias, the girl in the green mantle, continue their iourney in the charge of Cristal Nixon , Latimer dressed as a woman and with an iron mask upon his face. At length face to face with Redgauntlet, Latimer is told once more that his history is closely linked with the recent history of his country.
