Philip Carey is now designer of costumes in the firm of Lynn and Sedley. After the worst quarrel of their lives Mildred has gone, and, as a result of a Stock Exchange speculation, Philip has very little money. He hears from Blackstable that his uncle, the Rev. William Carey, is very ill and goes to see him; a few weeks later Mr. Carey has a further heart attack and dies.
Philip inherits about five hundred pounds from his uncle, and decides to finish his medical training. During this time he frequently visits the Athelny household, and on Sally Athelny's birthday presents her with a gold chain which had belonged to his aunt, Mrs. Carey. When he has qualified "he decides to go for a month as locum to Dr. South, an old man who has a practice in a Dorset village.
