You have already heard how, in 1853, Jeremy Shafto found his friend Andre was the prisoner of their old enemy Calamanco, who 'had set 'himself up as a sort of king among the Maroons of the wild Cockpit Country. Andre had been drugged with secret mixture of herbs whidh had made him lose his memory and become the Mexican Pablo Rivas. So bitter was Jeremy's anger that not only did he force the old Obeah-woman to give him the antidote to the poison but, against everybody's advice, he insisted on denouncing her in public as a fraud- bad mistake, as he soon discovered.
