Baby Girl by POLLY DEVLIN
The day after the birth of her first child, a young teacher lies in her hospital bed appalled to find herself as helpless and dependent on others as her new-born daughter. Having tried to anticipate how she might react to the event, she finds herself ill-prepared.
' Who am I now? I'm her mum, and I'm a patient. I'm not me. The Caesar in the side ward. The less trouble I am the more they'll like me; the more patient I am, the better a patient I am ... '
