Gramophone records illustrating the history of sonata form by Basil Lam
' The Bach; and early Haydn '
Listeners need hardly be reminded that sonata form is one of the most important of all musical forms, for it is the foundation of the modern symphony, concerto, quartet, trio-in fact, almost all instrumental music from Bach's time to our own. The aim of this series of twelve gramophone recitals is to trace the development of sonata form from its early beginnings up to modern times. These recitals, however, are intended to be not a series of lectures with musical examples, but rather a set of delightful musical programmes linked together by short and significant commentaries.
This afternoon's recital will cover the period of transition between Bach and Haydn.
