This week Alan Maryon Davis and Maggie Philbin are at the National Spinal Injuries Centre, Stoke Mandeville, with the man who raised ã10 million to build it - Jimmy Savile, OBE. Fifty years ago, if you damaged your spinal cord, it was nearly always fatal. Today, doctors at Stoke Mandeville aim to send their patients home after six to nine months. They work with a close-knit team to help each patient to achieve their personal best - for some that may be driving a car with special controls, swimming, or even archery; for others, getting dressed or moving around in a wheelchair.
