Women, in particular, discovered a passion for reading - and a new generation of lady novelists rose up in the leafy suburbs. But this literary explosion failed to produce a feminist revolution. Despite the many new freedoms and opportunities, most women preferred, in the end, to keep their passions quiet at home.
