Heir to Verdi. The Puccini family of Lucca, like the Bachs, were a musical dynasty, and Giacomo was expected to follow earlier generations by becoming a church musician. But as a teenager he was bowled over by a performance of Verdi's Aida and knew that he had to write operas.
