While exploring the mysterious Trak-phu Lung-ki Shi , the ' Cave of the Four Winds,' two members of Professor Mallory's party meet with accidents. David and Jane are left behind, but the others go on. Beyond 'he cave. at the edge of the Chang Tang plateau, they discover specimens of the remarkable plants cultivated by the Tibetan hermit, Lo-Ling, more than eight hundred years ago. The Professor is excited at this valuable scientific discovery, but when he and his companions return through the cave to meet Jane and David, they find an unpleasant surprise waiting for them.
