Debussy was not born in propitious circumstances. At one stage his parents' home was a two-room attic flat in the Pigalle district of Paris, so wealthy benefactresses played a crucial part in his life as a musician. Today Donald Macleod discusses some of the women who were important influences on Debussy's life.
