The Olympiad: The African Runners

on BBC One London

The emergence of the African runners is one of the most remarkable stories in sport. Twenty years ago Black Africans had not won a single track medal, but today names such as Kip Keino of Kenya, and John Akii-Bua of Uganda are known throughout the world. Ethiopians, Ghanaians and Nigerians all won Olympic medals in 1972, and a Tanzanian is favoured to win the 1500m Gold in Montreal this summer.

The rise of the African runner is a direct result of natural ability, ideal training conditions and the influence of American and European coaching techniques.
