Because of increased solar activity, there have been nights when the aurora borealis (northern lights) has been widely visible over Britain. As well as being beautiful to look at, there is much to be learned from studying the aurorasphere. Quentin Cooper talks to Dr Geoff Short from the University of York and Professor Mike Lockwood from the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory about the complex physics that lie behind the aurora.
