It is Midwinter's Eve of 1811 - Napoleon's army is advancing through Russia. A young soldier and the daughter of a wealthy landowner are furtively planning their marriage - her parents will not give their consent and the secret ceremony is to take place at midnight in a tiny chapel miles from anywhere. But a severe blizzard plays havoc with their arrangements....
