The Imperial Court music of Japan is called Gagaku which literally means ' refined, elegant music.' It is reliably documented since the eighth century and its basic structure has undergone little radical change. Eta Harich-Schneider discusses the five different kinds of gagaku and introduces recordings of each of them.
