More excerpts from the marriage diaries of Robert and Clara
Schumann, read by actors Juliet Stevenson and James Fleet.
For Clara, marriage is a dream come true, but the reality has its problems. Robert's frenetic composing makes it impossible for her to practise the piano, and her career is put on hold. She does a little teaching; Robert proudly lists his compositions for the year; and the two of them face up to more outrageous demands from Clara's maverick father. On their wedding day, Robert gave Clara a collection of 26 new songs as a symbol of his fervent love. Songs from Myrthen are included in each of this week's programmes, performed by Lynne Dawson (soprano), Ian Partridge (tenor) and Julius Drake
(piano). Other music today includes: Blumenstuck, Op 19 Andras Schiff (piano)
Carnival Jest from Vienna, Op 26 Murray Perahia (piano)
