In the aftermath of the 1914-18 war, certain privileged, aristocratic ' bright young things ' moved in a leisurely way between the London town house, the seat in the country, the place in ScoUand and the villa on the Riviera. Virginia, wife of Lord Tarlyon, was of that company; Ivor Marlay , a well-connected author, wounded in the war, was just a hanger-on - and the reason was Virginia
