Bach: St John Passion

on BBC Radio 3

(sung in German)
The roots of Bach's St John Passion lie in the liturgical Lutheran Passion music of Germany. Bach made no less than four versions of the work but seems, in the end, to have preferred the earliest one to the others. It was first heard in Leipzig in 1724 and it is that score which forms the basis of this performance.
