Mr. Hawkes argues that a good deal of what we call modem English literature has in fact been produced by writers in Wales, Ireland, and America - countries to the west of England itself. He suggests that many of the verbal difficulties and distortions associated with the modern movement arise from the necessity of expressing a foreign culture in a vehicle not originally conceived for it.
