Disillusioned with life in Prague, Smetana sets off for Sweden in 1856, having accepted a teaching post in Gothenburg. While continuing his career as a pianist, he was soon to show - with the encouragement of his friend Franz Liszt - that he could rise to the challenge of orchestral and operatic drama.
