The technique of exile has a special relevance for our times, but it is a technique we in England have had little need to cultivate. This is a circumstance for which we have every reason to be grateful, but, the speaker suggests, it has the dangers, for the English writer has tended to cling to his 'sense of belonging' at the expense of the 'vital need to explore.'
