Steffi Graf won the French Open last year, but her retirement has paved the way for a brace of youngsters to fill the chasm, including Lindsay Davenport and Martina Hingis, who are the favourites to contest this match. However, this tournament has proved notoriously unpredictable in the past, and it is not inconceivable that one of the five French seeds could pull off a famous home victory on the clay courts.
