That Ill-Tempered Cavity

on BBC Radio 4 FM

A binaural extravaganza celebrating the Severn Tunnel's 100th anniversary written and presented by Roger Worsley
'Only one man can build this tunnel now,' said Sir Daniel Gooch as he stood in the flooded workings, 'and that's the man we should have asked in the first place!'
It was the most expensive and dangerous undertaking of its time and, for six years, Thomas Walker had to do battle with the mightiest river in England and Wales. This programme tells the story of Walker's miners and divers, and re-creates some of the sounds they would have heard a hundred years ago under the Bristol Channel.
