Michael Holroyd , critic and biographer, investigates the origins and early development of the Fabian Society in the light of Norman and Jeanne Mac Kenzie's The First Fabians, published today. Dominated by Sidney Webb and Bernard Shaw , the group's missionary zeal, as Shaw called it, laid the groundwork for the Labour Party.
