One of the least-known of Verdi's operas, Alzira was the composer's first collaboration with the renowned librettist Salvatore Camarano. They took as their subject a tragedy by Voltaire set in Peru, where one of the Spanish invaders and an Inca tribal chieftain are rivals for the love of the princess Alzira. This performance was given at Covent Garden last week. Sung in Italian. Presented by Piers Burton-Page with Michael Oliver.
