Professor Moelwyn Merchant visits St. Ives to question Dame Barbara Hepworth about the faith expressed in her new 'Construction (Crucifixion)' and in the work which has preceded it.
"I very much wanted to make a Crucifixion which enabled one to recognise the figure of Christ on the Cross and the rudimentary forms to the left and to the right, to make spaces where one could enter and to bring one, as it were, to one's knees. But to do it in a way which entirely fitted the development of my own calligraphy and to be at home on a hill-side, or in an old cathedral or in a new cathedral, and to be valid in all respects 2,000 years hence."
