2/4. Folk singer Eliza Carthy looks at the rise of folk-rock over the past 40 years and at the success of folk comedians.
Developing out of the British folk revival in the early 1960s, folk-rock groups such as Fairport
Convention and Steeleye Span brought traditional music to a wider audience and even into the charts. At the same time, comedians, among them Billy Connolly , Jasper Carrott and Mike Harding , built their audiences in the folk clubs before they too made the transition to a bigger stage.
With contributions from
Richard Thompson , Ashley Hutchings and Mike Harding , and music from Fairport Convention and Steeleye Span.
