The Human Animal

on BBC One London

"It sounds like a contradiction, but our playfulness is the most serious thing about us. It is one of the main reasons we became the dominant species on the planet," says Desmond Morris as he comes to the end of the series in which he gives a personal view of the human species.
Entitled Beyond Survival the programme examines what the human animal does once it has sorted out the basic survival needs of food, warmth and shelter. The answer is that we play and Morris shows the many forms this takes - from artistic and creative endeavours to risk-takingexperiences - and demonstrates how aesthetic decisions are being made every day by people across the world.
He concludes by saying that although no single element sets the human species apart from other animals, it is undoubtedly our insatiable playfulness that makes us "superbly human". Producer Graham Booth
