In Quality Street, a decorous thoroughfare in early 19th-century England, a man's footsteps echo in the hearts of its resident spinsters. Young Phoebe Throssel falls in love with dashing Captain Valentine Brown , who is soon off to the Napoleonic Wars. Ten years later he returns and Phoebe, having waited for him, sees herself as an 'old maid' and takes desperate measures to try to win him back.
