Wordsworth, Constable and the English Landscape

on BBC Radio 3

A conversation between Hugh Sykes Davies , literary critic, and Basil Taylor , art historian and critic.
A feeling for landscape in general, and for the English landscape in particular, developed strongly in the course of the 18th century; but by the early 19th century it was ' nature ' rather than the scenic qualities of the landscape that provided the inspiration. BASIL TAYLOR and HUGH SYKES DAVIES trace some of the similarities and contrasts between the visual and the verbal ways of expressing a feeling for nature. Producer LEONIE COHN
