Victor Jacquemont was a young French naturalist. He arrived in Calcutta in May 1829 and, as he journeyed into the mountains enduring hardships and dangers, he impressed everyone with his coolness and courage, not least the feared and lascivious Sikh Maharajah Ranjit Singh.
