Double Portraits
With Peggy Reynolds.
2: Cherubini and Ingres
When the great French painter Ingres painted Luigi Cherubini , he looked forward eagerly to the composer's reaction. It was an original composition showing Cherubini deep in thought, but much to Ingres's disappointment Cherubini said nothing, and it was only on the day of Cherubini's death that Ingres learned that Cherubini had written a canon in his honour to thank him for the picture. Music in the programme includes:
Gounod Six Mélodies pour le Cor a Pistons: No 3
Barry Tuckwell (French horn), Daniel Blumenthal (piano)
Mozart Violin Sonata in E minor, K304 Arthur Grumiaux ,
Walter Klien (piano)
Cherubini Overture: Les Deux
Journées (The Water Carrier)
Academy of St Martin in the Fields, conductor Neville Marriner
Beethoven Overture: Rdelio
Vienna Philharmonic, conductor Wilhelm Furtwangler
