THE PERCY BUSH ORCHESTRA

on Regional Programme London

View in Radio Times

Bromsgrove Fair (Rustic Suite) Bridgewater
Felix White's suite, ' Cakes and Ale,' was originally scored for strings, but extra instrumentation for a fuller orchestra has been added by the composer specially for this occasion. The Suite is in six movements, and the titles are borrowed from Elizabethan times, each section having a motto from Shakespeare, or his fellow-dramatists. The scheme comprises a Dub (an old name for a March), the nimble Hornpype, a Heidegye (nobody quite knows what this was), a Milk-maid's Dance, a Doleful Dump, and a Merry Dump to wind up the whole.
