8.05 Book of the Month
An extended review of one of the month's most interesting new publications. Martin Gilbert tackles one of the most controversial stories of the modern world in his new book, Israel: a History. Published on the eve of the 50th anniversary of the declaration of independence of the state of Israel, the book considers the birth of the secular Zionist movement in the years leading up to the state's foundation, as well as the following half-century of massive immigration, five wars, terrorism and cultural conflict. In this review, Rabbi David Goldberg reflects on the successes and failures of Zionism.
