Bach and Handel were Mendelssohn's models in his first oratorio, St Paul , completed in 1836. Its success led to the composition of Elijah. first performed in Birmingham with the composer conducting. Mendelssohn died the following year, aged 38, without completing his third oratorio, Christus. (Elijah can be heard tomorrow evening direct from Coventry Cathedral)
