October 1916: a telegram has arrived telling Maggs that her husband has been killed in the trenches. As she sits up all night with her mother, fighting to face the reality of his death, she waits for the start of the early morning bombardment across the Channel, desperately needing to hear above the roar of guns the voices of the soldiers singing.
