Another queen attended the Coronation in 1953, Salote, Queen of Tonga, who almost stole the show with her colourful personality and her insistence on riding in an open carriage on that rainy day. Cultural historian Annette Kuhn recalls her visit and explores some of the deeper reasons for her popularity.
