The Highways and Byways of Lied Leo Black recalls memorable events and personalities from his years as a BBC music producer, including a concert given in 1962 to celebrate the opening of Coventry's new cathedral with music by Mendelssohn and Brahms, and Beethoven's Elegischer Gesang. The performers were Heather Harper
(soprano), Janet Baker (mezzo), John Mitchinson (tenor), John Shirley-Quirk (baritone) and the Martin Quartet. Schubert's anniversary year is celebrated with Ian Partridge singing Sei Mir Gegrusst , and Gyorgy Pauk (violin) and Peter Frankl (piano) performing the Fantasy in C, D934. There is a tribute to Welsh soprano Mary Thomas , who died earlier this year, including her performance of Dallapiccola's Quattro Liriche di
Antonio Machado with the composer at the piano. Plus the songs of Eisler, and Krenek's cantata Durch die Nacfit with the Wigmore Ensemble, conductor Jacques-Louis Monod. Producer Vicky Whitaker
