Play of the Month: The Marquise

on BBC One London

by Noel Coward
[Starring] Celia Johnson
also starring Philip Latham, Richard Vernon

One of Coward's few 'costume' plays, The Marquise is set in 18th-century France (pre-Revolutionary, of course).
Celia Johnson plays The Marquise whose presence complicates the betrothal of a widower's daughter to the son of his oldest friend.
She has been frequently associated with Coward's work, ever since her unforgettable performance in "Brief Encounter".
Her co-stars are Richard Vernon, who became something of a cult-hero as "The Man in Room 17", and Philip Latham, a long way from the boardroom battles of "The Troubleshooters".
