From the Royal Festival Hall, London. Mahler's cataclvsmic
Sixth Symphony is performed by the BBC Symphony Orchestra with their new principal guest conductor
Jiri Belohlavek. Written on a vast scale, for massive orchestral forces, this is the only one of Mahler's symphonies or song cycles in which death triumphs over life. The composer himself described the last movement, with its hammer blows, as "the hero, on whom fall three blows of fate, the last of which fells him as a tree is felled".
