John Dankworth continues the story of Count Basie in the postwar years when the big bands found it a struggle to survive. Basie responded by cutting back to a smaller ensemble and bringing in new talent such as Illinois Jacquet, Clark Terry, Paul Gonsalves and Wardell Gray. Contributors include Benny Powell, Jay McShann and Illinois Jacquet.
