by Henrik Ibsen, translated by Michael Meyer
Starring Diana Rigg as Rita Allmers and Anthony Hopkins as Alfred Allmers
with Peggy Ashcroft as the Rat Wife
The marriage of Rita and Alfred Allmers is not happy. When their only son Eyolf is drowned in a tragic accident, their sadness and guilt lead them at first to bitter recrimination. But Ibsen's rarely performed masterpiece, while showing the harm which grows from deception, also movingly depicts the strength which two people can draw from facing up to the truth.
On its first English production in 1896, William Archer wrote 'I rank the play beside, if not above, the very greatest of Ibsen's works'.
