This opera, based on the Alcestis of Euripides, is considered to be aniong the finest of Handel's Italian operas. It was first performed at the King's Theatre, Haymarket, in January 1727 and proved a remarkable success. There were several revivals in London. and it was the last of the composer's operas to be performed during his lifetime Cast in order of singing:
