6—The 'Veronica'Trial Murder
Liverpool Assizes-1903
In 1002 the sailing ship Veronica left the Gulf of Mexico for Montevideo with a cargo of timber. During the voyage a mutiny broke out and all but five of the crew of thirteen officers and men were killed. The Veronica was set on fire and the five survivors reached the river Paranahyba in Northern Brazil in the longboat where they were picked up by the steamship Brunswick. In May 1903 three of them were tried for murder at Liverpool Assizes, the other two, one of whom turned King's Evidence, being the principal witnesses for the prosecution.
