When his wife and child are murdered and his farm burnt to the ground by Captain Terrill's Union raiders, Missouri farmer Josey Wales vows to avenge their deaths and joins up with a band of Confederate guerrillas. Betrayed at the end of the war by the guerrilla leader, Wales escapes from the Union troops and attempts to build a new life for himself with a band of waifs and strays he picks up on his travels. However, he is fated to cross swords with Terrill once more.
