by Victor Hugo
In 1796 Jean Valjean was sent to the galleys for stealing a loaf of bread. After 19 years he is released, but finds himself driven from every door until the Bishop of Digne gives him food and shelter. Valjean repays the good old man by making off in the middle of the night with his silver.
