The Late Film: Secret Ceremony

on BBC One London

Starring Elizabeth Taylor, Mia Farrow, Robert Mitchum

Leonora, a faded street-walker, is 'adopted' by Cenci, a strange, waif-like young girl who insists the older woman is her mother.
Reminded of her own daughter drowned at the age of ten, Leonora finds herself drawn to the mysterious child. And so she enters Cenci's weird, ambiguous world where the reality of life is replaced by the secret ceremony of violence and death.
Recalling the hypnotic, uncertain atmosphere of Accident. Losey's disturbing film contains three riveting characterisations from its principal actors.
